  1. A heavy, hard, lustrous, silver-white
  2. metallic element, symbol Mo, atomic number
  3. 42, atomic weight 95.94. The chief ore is the
  4. mineral molybdenite. The element is highly
  5. resistant to heat and conducts electricity
  6. easily. It is used in alloys, especially to
  7. harden steels. It is a necessary trace
  8. element in human nutrition. It was named in
  9. 1781 by Swedish chemist K W Scheele, after
  10. its isolation by P J Helm (1746-1813), for
  11. its resemblance to lead ore (from Greek
  12. malybdos, lead). It has a melting point of
  13. 2,620 degrees C, and is not found in the free
  14. state. As an aid to lubrication, molybdenum
  15. disulphide (MoS2) greatly reduces surface
  16. friction between ferrous metals. Producing
  17. countries include Canada, the USA, and
  18. Norway.
